Water Filtration and Soil

Soil filters and cleans water through three main processes: physical, chemical, and biological filtration.

Physical Filtration (Straining)
As water moves through soil, the spaces between soil particles trap sediment, debris, and some pollutants. The size and arrangement of these pores determine how effectively soil can filter water—finer soils with smaller pores are better at trapping particles, while coarser soils allow water to pass through more quickly.

Chemical Filtration
Soil particles often have a negative charge, which attracts and holds positively charged ions such as calcium, magnesium, and potassium from the water, removing them from the water stream. Some pollutants are also removed through chemical bonding within the soil, reducing their presence in filtered water.

Biological Filtration
Soil contains microorganisms like bacteria and fungi that break down organic pollutants, transforming harmful chemicals into less toxic substances or even into carbon dioxide and water. These biological processes help decompose contaminants and further purify the water as it passes through the soil.
