Abstract

Cancer has emerged as a leading cause of mortality worldwide, despite medical advancements, posing a significant challenge. Extensive research is being conducted to explore novel strategies for tackling this complex disease, driven by the need to mitigate side effects of treatment, and drug resistance. The individuals suffering from cancer often face physical, cognitive, and emotional difficulties. The quest for effective cancer treatment has led to increased interest of scientific community in natural products, especially obtained from fruits and vegetables These natural compounds have been the focus of research and studies due to their potential health benefits in combating cancer. Since ancient times, pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) fruit has been utilized to prevent and treat various diseases and ailments. There is a growing body of evidence showing potential health benefits of pomegranate, especially anti-cancer properties. Pomegranate contain several phytochemicals that possess antioxidant properties. These phytochemicals include anthocyanins, ellagitannins, and hydrolysable tannins. This review explores the promising health benefits of pomegranate and its potential role in the mechanism of cancer progression inhibition. Moreover, the ability of pomegranate to inhibit cancer cell proliferation, invasion, and metastasis across various cell lines are also discussed. Hence, pomegranate has potential as a natural approach to support cancer management.
