What is Olericulture?
The word “Olericulture“ is derived from “Oleris” a Latin word for pot herbs or vegetables and “cultura” meaning cultivation. Thus it is the cultivation of vegetables.
It is a specialized branch of horticulture that deals with the scientific study of cultivation, production, improvement, propagation, harvesting, postharvest handling and storage, processing, marketing and utilization of vegetable crops for human consumption.
Olericulture involves growing non-woody, herbaceous plants including fruit-bearing, leafy or root vegetable crops for human consumption.
Which crops are included in olericulture or vegetable science?
All herbaceous crop plants grown primarily for their edible parts like roots, stems, leaves, flowers, or fruits, that are eaten fresh or cooked, are included in vegetable science.
What are root vegetables?
Root vegetables include crop plants with underground edible parts. These can be True Root or Underground Non-Root vegetables.
True Root Vegetables
Taproot Vegetables: These vegetable plants store food in their primary (tap) root and grow vertically downward.
